It’s a great week for new comedies and Upload is leading the pack. Uploads themselves even have their own built-in class structure, from billionaires whose hotel room doors open onto vast and luxurious virtual estates, to the “two-gigs” housed in Lakeview’s basement, who have to resist the urge to think or emotionally react too hard, lest they burn through their meager allotment of data for the month and pathetically freeze in place. Worse, the constant jerking effect these sequences exhibit on the series’ tone do it no favors. Upload tries to do something similar, but with one of the sides of its equation so much stronger than the rest, it threatens, more than once, to topple into something that falls a fair sight short of paradise. Aug 24, 2020 Upload is an Amazon series created by Office and Parks & Rec Greg Daniels who now brought us this comedy about the chance to choose between having your soul uploaded or …
Or, to fall back on those same Good Place comparisons: Schur’s afterlife opus executed a remarkable balancing act by keeping its cosmic scope and its personal stakes perfectly in check (give or take your personal feelings on the Chidi-Eleanor stuff, at least). The new half-hour comedy from Greg Daniels, the creator of The Office US and Parks and Recreation, is a smart, engaging and really bingeable new offering from Amazon Prime Video. It's pretty mature, with sexual content that includes simulated sex acts with nudity, lots of uses of "f--k," and violent moments including car crashes, decapitations, and suicide. It’s not long before he’s beset by the grim specters of all the irritants of modern online living: Microtransactions, unexpected hidden fees, and, of course, ubiquitous pop-up ads. That “digital life extension” comes in handy when 27-year-old Nathan (Robbie Amell) dies after his self-driving car crashes into a truck. It betrays an unfortunate lack of confidence in the richness of the series’ world, falling back on the idea that there has to be some kind of “myth arc” active in order to keep watchers engaged. It’s more Black Mirror than Black Mirror.
TV Reviews TV Review: ‘Upload’ By Kyle Wilson April 28, 2020. It’s telling that Upload itself doesn’t seem to take this angle of its story terribly seriously, despite the fact that it takes up far too much of its run-time—especially as the season progresses. There is life after death, but it looks a lot like life in UploadSource:Supplied.
With a high laughs-per-minute ratio and sharp, smart writing, don’t be surprised if you binge all 10 episodes in one go. If Upload was just a funny ha-ha TV show that relied only on its jokes, it would still be a pleasurable experience. And, hey, Taco Bell has a new burrito that Lakeview’s customer services reps are more than happy to recommend. Unfortunately, the show’s willingness to explore the skewed power dynamic between its hero and his existential landlord often gets bogged down in an even more regrettable plot thread: The techno-thriller shenanigans surrounding its main character’s mysterious death. Nathan comes from a working class family but his vain girlfriend Ingrid (Allegra Edwards) is super wealthy, so she uploads him on her family’s account into Lakeview – the most elite simulation. Robbie Amell, Andy Allo, Chris Williams, Kevin Bigley, Owen Daniels, Allegra Edwards, Hourlong comedy; complete first season watched for review. There he meets his customer service “Angel,” Nora Anthony (Andy Allo), real world employee of Horizen, assigned to virtually help him acclimate to his new rustic, digital resort living. And the show certainly doesn’t shy away from its precedents with visual or thematic gags to The Sims, The Truman Show and even Mitch Albom’s book, The Five People You Meet In Heaven. It’s difficult to talk about Greg Daniels’ new Amazon series Upload without invoking comparisons to the work of his old pal Michael Schur—specifically, The Good Place. But while both Amell, and especially Allo, are charismatic enough, with chemistry aplenty, there’s a certain sense of routine to their interactions that underlies Upload’s inventiveness in most other respects. Nathan’s real world girlfriend Ingrid (Allegra Edwards) is a great example of where Upload goes wrong. Sacha Baron Cohen hits back at Rudy Giuliani’s scene in Bora... These tonal jumps throughout are disrupting and take away from the overall enjoyment factor within what is some extremely fun worldbuilding from Daniels and the vibrant cast. Robbie Amell (The Flash, Code 8) stars as Nathan Brown, a newly uploaded mind to the virtual afterlife server Lakeview, after a fatal accident with a self driving car.
